The Gettysburg Address (etc.)

This was the third question addressed to the side that went "first first" in this quiz, and the third that asked for a year. Some people felt that leeway should have been allowed on some if not all of them. However, to be fair:

As pointed out in the comment attached to Question 1, the division of Korea was one of the conditions of the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II. It's not unreasonable to expect people to know this, and so leeway is arguably not necessary
It's not unreasonable to expect people to know that any one of the three events mentioned in Question 3 occurred during World War I – especially the execution of Edith Cavell. To give leeway would make the question very easy indeed – especially for the second team if it were passed over
Question 5 stated that the event to which it referred occurred during the American Civil War; it's not unreasonable to expect people to know the dates of this conflict, and for anyone who did know them the same comment would apply as for Question 3

Even so ... without wishing to patronise, or be elitist: questions that ask for years (or other numbers) are not popular in the A League – particularly if no leeway is allowed – even if they do seem to go down OK in the B and C Leagues (see Nick's Blog). To give three such questions consecutively to one side – especially at the very start of the quiz – could be considered unfair.
